Latest GS1 standards used in serialization solutions


Servicepoint has joined standards organization GS1’s Partner Network that helps for example pharmaceutical companies in finding reliable partners for their serialization projects. Servicepoint utilizes GS1 standards in its Systech UniSeries serialization system solutions as well as in customer-specific marking and traceability solutions.

Serialized medicine packages are coded and marked with application identifiers in accordance with the GS1 standards. The identifiers contain, among other things, the GTIN product identifier and a serial number of the product. The identifiers can be inserted with lots of other information as well. Application identifiers are used in data systems of logistics chains as an international language of communication which ensures the traceability of medicine packages.

Additionally, all higher packaging levels, such as boxes and pallets, can be coded and marked in a similar manner. To ensure traceability in a serialization system solution, a data model is created for connecting all individual codes from a lower packaging level to higher-level packaging data. The process is called aggregation.

This international data system makes it possible to trace medicine packages throughout their entire order and supply chain. In addition, the distribution of medicines to patients in hospitals is safer and less faulty when medicines, nursing staff, and patients can be connected to the same data system in a manner enabled by GS1 standards.

GS1 is a global, non-profit standards organization. The GS1 system is utilized by more than 1.4 million companies around the world. In addition, a GS1 identifier is involved daily in the recording and exchange of over 6 billion transactions.
